Myron Briggs is an American Maker, whose creativity grows out of his native Northern California. He moved from Santa Cruz, California, in the fall of 1989 to intern at the Smithsonian Museum of African Art, in Washington DC. He arrived in the nation’s capital, five days before the devastating Loma Prieta Earthquake Quake. Prior to his relocation to the east coast, he was employed by University of Santa Cruz Arboretum, where he managed a 5 acre collection of native Australian and South African plants. An experience which continues to shape his world view. His current focus centers around a multi-year project creating a missing set of imaginary baseball cards. He drew an entire series of baseball cards largely from imagination employing the teachings from his self-published book, Lessons in Drawing: from Ancient to Future, which was written for his ‘eight-year-old-self.’ In this book he teaches how to draw with a pencil like a musical instrument. He approaches drawing like a jazz musician and encourages the creative growth outside of formal institutions. https://www.youtube.com/live/PQ_zyrPnJUU

My visual creativity is centered in drawing out of the imagination. Underneath all of my paintings is a well composed drawing. Every painting that I make derives from a precisely executed pencil drawing that is the blue print for my paintings. Most digital artists can’t draw and they don’t believe drawing is important — and it shows. The average digital artists creates pixilated eye-candy, or poor versions of Salvadore Dali. Their work consists largely of images that lack natural beauty, compositional integrity, and the basic storytelling component. Their work lacks the fundamentals of fine art: beauty and virtue. My art emerges from a long line of creators whose artistic accomplishments inform me from the ancient past. I believe in drawing as the most fundamental form of communication known to mankind. I believe drawing is fundamental. I believe in the healing power of drawing. I believe drawing elevates the mundane to extraordinary heights of exceptionalism. I believe drawing is the great equalizer. I believe drawing illustrates intelligence beyond standardized IQ. I believe that drawing has prophetic implications and it will always be a vital skill sets. The basic aspirations of the human race will always feature drawing to elevate our common purpose.
